Thinking about escaping the ups and downs of winter in East Tennessee by going on vacation? Here are a few helpful reminders to keep your home safe while you are away!
- Do something as simple as asking a trusted neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your home for you! Have them stop by every so often, and maybe even park in your driveway or leave a light on—just to make it appear as if someone is still home.
- Have a plan for your mail—either contact your postal service to stop delivery. If mail is piling up in your mailbox or packages are all over your doorstep, burglars are more likely to notice your home as an empty target. You could even entrust a neighbor to pick up your mail for you, just to get it inside, out of view.
- Something as simple as making sure that you have a strong door with a good deadbolt lock system could be enough to deter a burglar. Make it difficult to get into your home uninvited. Make sure your security system is up to date. Install motion sensor lights on the outside of your home. If breaking into your home proves to be too much of a challenge, chances are, burglars will give up when the going gets tough.
- Do not overshare about your vacation on social media! Avoid those voicemail messages or automatic email responses that would let people know that you are out of town. Wait to post your vacation photos until you are safely back home. If you limit knowledge that you are away from your home, it will likely be assumed that you are there to protect it.
